담백한 한옥 위에 얹힌 청의 기운

처음 이곳을 방문했을 때, 대문이 오래되어 제역할을 하지 못하는 한옥이었습니다. 마당 위에는 지붕이 얹히고 외내부에 조적벽이 덧대어지며 한옥의 본래 구조가 흐릿해져 있었습니다. 공사를 진행하며 증축되고 불필요한 요소를 걷어내자 별관의 기둥과 서까래는 거의 소실되었고 노출된 황토 천장은 갈라지고 떨어져 군데군데 빈 구멍만 남아 있었습니다. 우리는 남아 있는 기둥과 보, 서까래를 깎아내어 다시 색을 입혀주며 새로운 나무 기둥을 세워 잃어버린 구조를 채워 넣었습니다. 이 과정으로 오래된 한옥에 새로운 생명을 불어넣어주었습니다.

청감각 프로젝트는 모던한 한옥에 푸른 빛을 한 방울 떨어뜨리고 싶다는 의견을 받아 시작되었습니다. 공간 전체를 강한 청색으로 덮기보다 한옥 고유의 고요한 결 속에서 은은하게 빛이 살아나길 바랬습니다. 걸음을 옮길 때마다 곳곳에 흩어진 청색을 발견하는 작은 즐거움을 남기고자 했습니다. 전체적인 톤은 어두운 우드와 화이트를 기반으로 하여 단정함을 유지했습니다. 여기에 청색의 그라데이션 벽지, 청경, 청색 타일과 자갈, 작은 오브제들을 자연스럽게 배치해 공간에 깊이를 더했습니다.

새로 깎아 세운 나무와 오래된 나무가 함께 서 있는 구조는 이 한옥이 지나온 시간과 새롭게 이어갈 시간 사이의 묵직한 균형을 만들어줍니다. 단순히 새로 꾸며진 공간이 아니라 무너져 가던 구조를 다시 일으켜 세우고 그 위에 현대적인 색감과 감각을 더한 공간입니다.

A Quiet Hanok Touched by Hues of Blue

When we first encountered this place, the hanok’s main gate had aged beyond its function. A roof had been added over the courtyard, and masonry walls layered both inside and out, blurring the original structure of the hanok. As the renovation began and later additions were removed, much of the annex’s columns and rafters had already been lost. The exposed earthen ceiling was cracked and crumbling, leaving scattered voids throughout. We carefully trimmed and refinished the remaining columns, beams, and rafters, restoring their color, while introducing new wooden columns to reconstruct what had been lost. Through this process, new life was breathed into an aging hanok.

The Cheong-gam project began with the idea of introducing a single drop of blue into a modern hanok. Rather than covering the entire space in a dominant blue tone, the intention was for subtle light and color to quietly emerge within the hanok’s inherent calmness. We hoped to leave small moments of discovery—fleeting encounters with blue that reveal themselves as one moves through the space. The overall palette is grounded in dark wood and white, maintaining a composed and restrained atmosphere. Within this framework, layers of blue appear through gradient wallpapers, blue-toned glass, tiles, gravel, and carefully placed objects, adding depth without excess.

The structure, where newly carved timber stands alongside aged wood, forms a quiet yet weighty balance between the time this hanok has lived through and the time it will continue to carry forward. This is not simply a newly decorated space, but one that restores a structure on the verge of collapse and gently layers contemporary color and sensibility upon it—allowing past and present to stand together in calm equilibrium.
