온기를 품은 한지

단백하고 검소하며 소박하지만 이곳을 찾는 이들의 마음에 조용히 닿아 각기 다른 감각과 기억으로 남는 공간이 되기를 바라는 마음에서 이 프로젝트는 시작되었습니다. 과한 표현이나 설명보다 머무는 이의 상태와 시간에 따라 다르게 읽히는 여백을 남기고자 했습니다.

1970년대에 지어진 한옥을 마주하며 전통의 형태를 그대로 보존하는 것보다 그 안에 담긴 정서와 태도를 어떻게 오늘의 언어로 다시 풀어낼 수 있을지에 대한 고민이 중심이 되었습니다. 지나치게 한옥처럼 보이지 않으면서도 그 근간이 사라지지 않도록 전통과 현대의 균형을 섬세하게 조율하고자 했으며 대문을 열고 들어오는 길을 고요한 ‘백의 길’로 설정해 외부의 소음을 서서히 걷어내고 공간의 온도에 천천히 적응하도록 유도했습니다.

튼튼하면서도 반투명한 한지로 감싼 공간을 지나 디딤석을 밟을 때 느껴지는 담담함은 현대와 과거를 부드럽게 연결하는 전이의 순간을 만들어냅니다. 한지는 시선을 완전히 차단하지 않으면서도 빛을 투과해 공간 안에 은은한 온기와 깊이를 머물게 하고 현대식 구조와 옛 구조 사이의 단절을 하나의 담장 개념으로 재해석해 새로운 요소들이 과거의 흔적과 자연스럽게 공존하도록 합니다.

이 공간은 전통을 재현하기보다 전통이 지닌 태도와 온기를 오늘의 감각으로 옮겨온 장소입니다. 한지가 품은 빛과 공기와 흐르는 시간 속에서 머무는 이들은 설명되지 않은 편안함과 오래 남는 여운을 경험하게 됩니다.

Hanji Embracing Warmth

This project began with the hope of creating a space that is plain, modest, and unassuming—yet one that quietly reaches those who enter, lingering as individual sensations and memories. Rather than relying on overt expression or explanation, the design leaves room for interpretation, allowing the space to be read differently depending on one’s state of mind and the passage of time.

In approaching a hanok built in the 1970s, the focus was not on preserving traditional forms as they were, but on reinterpreting the emotions and attitudes embedded within them through a contemporary lens. Careful balance was sought so that the space would not appear overtly traditional, yet its foundation would remain intact. The approach path beyond the main gate was conceived as a quiet “white path,” gently filtering out the noise of the outside world and allowing visitors to slowly attune themselves to the space’s atmosphere.

Passing through layers of sturdy yet translucent hanji and stepping onto the stone threshold creates a moment of calm transition—softly connecting past and present. Hanji does not completely block the gaze; instead, it filters light, allowing a subtle warmth and depth to settle within the space. Rather than exposing the disjunction between modern construction and older structures, this relationship is reinterpreted through the concept of a boundary wall, enabling new elements to coexist naturally with traces of the past.

Rather than reproducing tradition, this space carries forward the attitude and warmth inherent in it, translated into a contemporary sensibility. Within the light, air, and quiet flow of time held by hanji, those who stay encounter an unspoken comfort and a lingering sense of resonance.
